A strange and frustrating start to the season got a little more bizarre on Wednesday when Celtics rookie Fab Melo was brought to Boston to get examined for a concussion he says was the result of running into a hotel door while playing for the D-League Maine Red Claws.

"What was it here, Manny being Manny? Well, in five years, when he's doing great things for us, we'll have Fab being Fab. He just got a head start, literally," joked head coach Doc Rivers before Wednesday's game with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Melo, who has recorded a triple-double and set a D-League record recently with 14 blocks in a game, had to be recalled Wednesday to receive medical treatment from the Celtics staff.

Melo has had two games in his D-League stint that have raised a lot of eyebrows in Boston. On Dec. 22, he scored 15 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, and blocked 14 shots in a triple-double against the Erie Bayhawks. He followed that by scoring 32, grabbing nine rebounds and blocking another nine shots. The Celtics are allowing Melo to develop at D-League, signing another D-League player in Jarvis Varnad for center depth as Chris Wilcox recovers from a sprained thumb.
