Chris Carpenter -- part of the compensation received by the Red Sox from the Cubs for Theo Epstein -- will have elbow surgery performed by Dr. James Andrews on Thursday, according to a team source. News of the surgery first came via a post on the pitcher's Twitter account.

"Headed into surgery tomorrow with Dr. Andrews to remove a bone spur in my elbow," Carpenter wrote. "Stayin positive and prepared to work harder than ever to come back as soon as I can this season!"

Carpenter has not pitched since March 19 and struggled in two appearances this spring, allowing four runs and five walks in 1.2 innings pitched. The Sox acquired Carpenter on February 21 following four months of compensation negotiation with the Cubs.
